by Dr Chong Tze Sheng, Aesthetic Doctor of Ko Skin SpecialistSagging is an unavoidable phenomenon that will happen on our faces and body parts when we age. When it comes to “age gracefully”, people have their own definitions on what that means. However, accepting the aging process does not imply that you have to look like a wreck. To age requires no effort at all but to age with grace, it’s a different matter.
PDO thread lift is one of the most safe and effective methods to do so, non-surgically. This procedure is most commonly done for the face, while it is also extremely effective in breast and neck lifting and firming, as well as arms, thighs, tummy, calves and buttock tightening and elevation.
It uses PDO (polydioxanone) thread, a type of suture material commonly used in cardiovascular surgeries. It can be done with much less downtime, discomfort, and risk than a surgical procedure.
PDO stimulates the production of collagen and hyaluronic acid, thus able to lift the skin to a more youthful and favourable position. It is applied in minimally invasive procedures to lift, tighten and rejuvenate the skin without resorting to surgery. The threads are absorbable and therefore will be fully absorbed in 4-6 months, leaving nothing behind but the lifted skin structure which continues to hold for another 12-24 months.
This Is How We Do It
The steps in a thread lift procedure are relatively uncomplicated. First, your doctor will assess the areas to be treated and determine the direction of the lift required. Numbing cream is applied or sometimes local anaesthetic is injected into the area of treatment. The threads are then embedded right under the skin with a long and fine needle. After pulling the needle out, the thread remains.
No incision or suturing is required in this procedure. The most common side effect post thread lift is bruising and mild swelling. Not all patients bruise, however if it happens, it take approximately a week to settle down. Swelling generally lasts for a few days only, and is usually not significant.
Rather than the dramatic changes produced by a surgical facelift, the change in appearance with the thread lift is significant but subtle. In other words, your features are enhanced but you still look like yourself because the tissues have been repositioned to where they were some years earlier.
Thread lifts induce a long term lift in the skin. The firming, tightening and lift achieved by this procedure is, however, under the constant influence of gravity. Hence, the tissues will tend to be pulled back towards their previous position. In a world without gravity, the beauty created by thread lift would be eternity. But given the effects of gravity, a thread lift may need to be repeated every 2 years, or as you wish.
The result of firming and lifting can be effectively enhanced with other modalities for example radiofrequency, high intensity focused ultrasound or lasers. Further treatment of lasers or any other devices are not contraindicated.
