  Eczema

Eczema is a general term encompassing various inflamed skin conditions. It is persistent and unsightly, characterized by redness, dryness, extremely itchy patches and more. Approximately 10% - 20% of the world’s population is affected by eczema.

There are several types, some more common than others including:

Atopic dermatitis
It causes dry, itchy and irritated skin that can swell, crack, crust and ooze clear fluid. There is no known cause, though it often affects people will a family history of allergies. Many factors can trigger or worsen this condition, including harsh soaps and detergents, lotions, allergies and even cold weather.

Contact eczema
It is a localized reaction (like redness, itching and burning) that occurs when the body reacts against a substance in contact with the skin. Repeated contact with this substance, or allergen, will cause the allergic reaction to develop over time. General irritants like certain chemicals are triggers, so are metals in jewellery and buckles, types of fabric and even perfume.

Seborrhoeic eczema
Signs and symptoms include yellowish, oily and scaly patches of skin on the scalp, face and sometimes other body parts. Skin becomes inflamed and starts to flake, causing dandruff on the head. Emotional stress, oily skin, infrequent shampooing and weather conditions are possible triggers.

Other types include:

  • Xerotic eczema (triggered by extreme dryness)
  • Dyshidrosis (a common type of hand eczema)
  • Discoid eczema (round spots of oozing or dry rash)
  • Venous eczema (occurs in those with impaired circulation, varicose veins and edema)
  • Dermatitis herpetiformis (intensely itchy with symmetrical rashes)
  • Neurodermatitis (caused by habitual rubbing and scratching)
  • Autoeczematization (reaction to infection with parasites, fungi, bacteria or viruses)

  Let us help.
Our dermatologists are here to share their solutions with you, and their experience treating this common but often frustrating skin problem. Our treatments include Phototherapy, Topical creams, Oral medications and supplements.

Phototherapy
It is a procedure that carefully exposes the skin to UV wavelengths to treat the rash and itching.

Topical creams
One of the most important components of an eczema treatment routine is to prevent scratching. As eczema is usually dry and itchy, the most common treatment is to apply lotions and creams to keep the skin moist and reduce the itch. Topical steroids of suitable strength depending on the severity of the eczema may be prescribed to manage symptoms.

Oral medications and supplements
For more severe cases, oral antihistamines (for itching) or oral corticosteroids (such as prednisone) may be prescribed to control the symptoms more effectively. Antibiotics will be necessary should the skin show signs of infection. Supplements like omega-3, vitamin D and vitamin E could further aid in boosting the health of the skin.

How can eczema be treated?

There is no known cure for eczema, but medications (oral and topical) and light therapy are available to control the symptoms by reducing inflammation and relieving itching. Lifestyle factors like avoiding allergens, controlling environmental factors and diet can have a positive effect. Topical or oral antibiotics may also be prescribed if your skin frequently becomes infected due to eczema.

How does phototherapy relieve eczema?

It involves exposing your skin to controlled amounts of UV light for a predetermined length of time to suppress overactive skin immune system cells that cause inflammation. UVA is mostly used, but UVB and Narrow Band UVB are also used. Our doctors have the experience and expertise to determine if phototherapy is appropriate for you.
