Excessive sweating

Excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis, is a common disorder characterized by an abnormal increase in perspiration – more than what is required for regulation of body temperature.

Primary hyperhidrosis is believes to be an inherited condition causing overactive sweat glands, while secondary hyperhidrosis may occur at any point in life due to certain diseases, menopause, some types of drugs and other factors. The excessive sweating may occur all over the body, or at certain parts of the body like the hands, feet, armpits and back area where there is a higher concentration of sweat glands.

Hyperhydrosis can get in the way of daily activities, causing difficulties in practical situations such as grasping objects. Needless to say, affected people also suffer from social embarrassment due to sweat spots and stains, and when they need to come into physical contact with other people. The problem is compounded when any anxiety caused by self-consciousness may even aggravate the sweating.

  Let us help.
When even clinical strength antiperspirants fail to work, consider Botulinum toxin – a proven treatment option for severe hand and underarm sweating. Botulinum toxin is injected into the affected areas to block the nerves that trigger sweat glands. Effects may persist from four to nine months depending on the site of injection.

How can Botulinum toxin help?

Botulinum toxin helps to control severe sweating by temporarily blocking the chemical signals from the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands. When the sweat glands don’t receive chemical signals, the severe sweating stops.

Will I stop sweating completely?

Botulinum toxin injections temporarily stop the production of excessive sweat in the treated areas only. Sweat continues to be produced elsewhere.

How can I determine if this treatment is right for me?

Your dermatologist is the best person to help you decide. Don’t forget to provide thorough information about your past and present medical conditions, and the medications, vitamins, and herbal products you take. Bear in mind that Botulinum toxin is not appropriate for all sufferers.
