  Eyebag removal

As we age, loose skin, surplus fatty tissue and relaxed muscle around the eyes lead to puffy lower eyelid "bags" and wrinkling of the skin.

  Let us help.
Eyebag removal, or lower blepharoplasty, is done to reduce the appearance of eyebags by removing fat and excess skin from the lower eyelid area. It is usually performed under general anaesthetic. We use the following methods for eyebag removal: Transconjunctival or incision.

What is transconjunctival blepharoplasty?

The transconjunctival method means that an incision is made through the conjunctiva on the inside of the eyelids, and avoids damage to supporting eyelid muscles. There is also no obvious scar on the outside of the lower eyelid. Your doctor will discuss the most suitable method of eyebag removal with you.

What can I expect during the surgery?

The procedure is normally performed under local anesthesia and only takes 40 minutes. This surgery is usually performed under local anaesthetic, so you will be awake during the procedure and might experience minor discomfort. If your surgeon prefers to use general anesthesia, you will be asked to follow fasting instructions prior to the surgery and will be completely asleep during the surgery.

Who is a good candidate for eyebag removal surgery?

If you are physically fit and realistic in your expectations of what to expect from the surgery, you are a good candidate to undergo the procedure. Most patients are above the age of 35, though younger individuals with a history of eyebags do opt for this surgery.

What happens post-surgery?

Your eyes will experience swelling and bruising which may last between two to three weeks. The sutures will be removed within one week after surgery. Follow your doctor’s instructions on administering eye ointment, eyedrops or painkillers, and instructions on avoiding contact lenses and make-up. Keep physical activities to a minimum, and wear sunglasses to alleviate sensitivity. It is best to sleep in a semi-reclined position at night to reduce water retention in the face and excess swelling.
