What happens during a facelift surgery?
Medications will be administered for your comfort, including intravenous sedation and general anaesthesia. Your doctor will recommend the best choice for you. A facelift incision begins in front of the ear extending up to the hairline, then it curves around the bottom of the ear and then behind it. It usually ends near the hairline at the back of the neck. After the incisions are made, fat can be suctioned and removed to improve facial contour. The muscles underneath are tightened and the skin is pulled back and trimmed. Your surgeon will determine how much excess skin should be removed, and then the incisions are sutured or stapled close. The procedure may take several hours.
How should I prepare for a facelift surgery?
Preparation begins at your pre-surgery consultation. Avoid smoking as it interferes with circulation and healing, stop taking certain medications as advised by your doctor, and other pre-surgery instructions.
What happens post-surgery?
Some pain is expected and can be alleviated with pain medications. If your face is numb, it should disappear in a few weeks. You may need to keep your head elevated and as still as possible for a couple of days after surgery, to minimize swelling. Any drainage tubes that have been inserted should be removed at the clinic within one or two days. You may be shocked or surprised by the puffy and bruised face that you see, but this will subside in a few weeks. You might have to take it easy for a few weeks but you should be able to go back to regular activities after a week of rest. Some scarring is possible, but if done well, they will be hidden by your hair or in the natural creases of your face and ears. In time they will fade and not be noticeable. If you feel any severe pain or other abnormal symptoms, call your doctor immediately.
Who is suitable to undergo a facelift?
Most facelift patients are between the ages 35 – 60, and physically healthy. The best results are experienced by people whose face and neck have begun to show signs of ageing but whose skin is still fairly elastic. A good bone structure which defines the face shape well also increases the success of a cosmetic surgery facelift.
What is a mid facelift?
A mid facelift may be the solution for individuals with sagging cheeks but no jowls or banding of the neck. Mid facelifts target the skin and muscle tissue in the cheeks to tighten and smooth their appearance.
What is a neck lift?
When the skin under the chin slackens due to age, genetic factors, the pull of gravity or harsh effects of the sun and wind, a “turkey neck” can develop. A neck lift removes excess sagging skin under the jawline and on the neck. Underlying neck muscles can be adjusted and tightened if it has begun to sag.
What is a forehead lift?
Given time and gravity, the muscles that hold the forehead smooth become weak and loose, causing deep wrinkles and sagging eyebrows. A forehead lift, also known as browlift or browplasty, removes excess tissue, skin and muscle to elevate the brows and smooth lines.
