In these cases, the elastic supportive tissue just beneath the skin surface starts to break down, causing stretch marks. They are most likely to appear in places where large amounts of fat are stored – like the tummy, breasts, upper arms, underarms, back, thighs, hips and buttocks.

Between 75% and 90% of women develop stretch marks to some degree during pregnancy. In young people, growth spurts and sudden or excessive weight gain can also cause stretch marks - about 70% of adolescent females and 40% of young males. |
